The legal rights for cohabitants vary significantly from married couples.  If you are considering cohabitation, we strongly recommend that you obtain specialist legal advice to ensure you are aware of your rights.   A cohabitation contract or agreement enables partners who live together but are not married or civil partners to regulate their affairs. In the past, cohabitation contracts were held to be void for reasons of public policy. However, the courts now recognise that many couples choose to cohabit outside marriage or civil partnership. A cohabitation contract is the best evidence of what was intended in the event the relationship breaks down.
